EAL & Writing

Using Lesson Study to achieve accelerated progress

Overview

This workshop will explore the successful strategies used in the EAL and Writing project, which ran in seven Leeds primary schools during the last academic year. We will look at the approaches to writing which resulted in accelerated progress, such as culturally inclusive planning and a focus on grammatical accuracy and academic language development, using the Lesson Study model. A colleague from Rosebank Primary School will share her experience of the project, how it has improved writing attainment for the target pupils and increased the confidence and skills of staff involved.

Outcomes

This workshop will enable you to:

* improve your understanding of the literacy needs of EAL learners and how to meet them

* know the key features of the Lesson Study model to improve teaching and learning in the classroom

Delegates will be given access to the resources, including two planned units of work for Y5 which model many of the strategies suggested in the project.
